Assault Charges For Allegedly Dragging Cop

BEAVER MEADOWS — A man is locked up in Carbon County on assault charges after authorities say he took off in a vehicle dragging a police chief who was trying to stop him.

Dean Kancir was picked up Thursday night at Hazleton General Hospital where he was visiting his fiancée.

According to investigators, the police chief of Beaver Meadows, Mike Moressi,  was staking out the property on Berwick Street Thursday where Kancir lives because authorities have been trying to evict him.

When the chief noticed the man, he yelled for him to stop. That’s when Kancir jumped into a car. The chief says he jumped on the hood and was dragged about 50 feet.

The chief was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police Chief Dragged by Car

BEAVER MEADOWS — The Beaver Meadows Police Chief Mike Morressi was dragged by a car in Carbon County Thursday.

The driver is still on the loose and the chief was sent to the hospital.

Earlier today, Chief Morressi was attempting to serve a long overdue eviction notice to a tenant outside of a home on Berwick Street in Beaver Meadows. When the chief saw the tenant, Dean Kancir, he attempted to serve the papers.

That’s when he said he was dragged by a car down Route 93 near Hazleton.

Kancir was living in a burnt out shell of a home along Berwick Street near Hazleton.  It’s where Police Chief Morresi was trying to serve a warrant to the man living here illegally.

The home burnt back in 2003 and was later bought by the borough of Beaver Meadows.

Dean Kancir, 41, and his family have refused to leave.

Beaver Meadows Mayor William Hines said this situation is a frustrating one.
